"Giuseppe Panza di Biumo: the collector curator. Projects for museums and exhibitions between public and private space"
Conference by Roberta Serpolli, art historian
This presentation considers the agency of collector Giuseppe Panza's museographic criteria through an analysis of his curatorial activity in both the contemporary museum and Villa Panza, the latter being a chosen place for exhibiting and experiencing art.
From the redefinition of the house museum's typology to specific projects for museums and installation designs, Panza's paradigm in exhibiting art envisioned an innovative aesthetic research on spatiality. In 2005, the collector was conferred an honorary degree in Architecture from Università della Svizzera Italiana, Mendrisio.
Free entry subject to availability.

"Panza remember that name" is a documentary film realized by Simone Pera and Alberto Saibene for FAI – Fondo Ambiente Italiano in collaboration with the Archivio Panza di Mendrisio. It tells the story of one of the most important collections of contemporary art in the world as well as the figure of a radical humanist who turned his Villa in Varese into a perfect self-portrait. The video recalls the many moments of Count Panza's activities, such as his pioneerjourneys to California looking for land art – of which he was a forerunner in Italy –celebratedtoday with an exhibition dedicated to its main representative artists, Robert Irwin and James Turrell, on show at Villa Panza until next November.
